Sciences

Life Science focuses on human biology.   A significant portion of the course is devoted to the study of selected body systems, both in their normal healthy state and with diminshed function brought about by lifestyle decisions such as smoking, drug use and diet. In addition, the course addresses the interrelatedness of our species with others on earth.  Lab investigation and experimentation couples with structured discussions allow the students to begin to build a genuine understanding of fundamental scientific concepts.  The lab activities in Grade 7 are a mix of qualitative and quantitative activities.  They tend to be open-ended, with students responsible for the design of many of the experiments. The operation of some of the latest data collecting hardware and software is introduced to students as well.  Activities are designed to allow students to rely mostly on concrete thinking although numerous opportunities for creativity and abstract reasoning are also provided.

Introductory Physical and Natural Scienceintroduces the students to basic concepts, theories and practices of physical science.  The students conduct experiments that encourage inquiry and ultimately leave the student with a strong understanding of substances and their physical and chemical properties.  Studying map and compass use culminates in an actual orienteering course; the unit on forces and structure precedes the bridge-building project.  The students are introduced to a laboratory setting; skills that are emphasized include safe and proper conduct in the laboratory and use of lab apparatus; detailed observation, measurement, and record keeping; identification of experimental variables and evaluation of experimental results.  Students generally work with partners or in teams so cooperative learning skills are enhanced.
